Who would have thought… master of TANNING, from Alaska! What is your background, tell us a bit about where you grew up and when you decided to move to Las Vegas.
I grew up in a small fishing town in Alaska called Kenai. I spent my summers fishing and my winters watching ice hockey games, being a social butterfly and dreaming of one day moving to a warm sunny place. As soon as I turned 18 I moved to Las Vegas and attended UNLV for Journalism & Media Studies.
When did you first become a lover of tanned skin?
I got obsessed with self-tanners in high school when I realized how quick and easy it was to get a faux glow instead of burning in the tanning beds which all of us cheerleaders did. I had bad luck with tanning beds and realized early on the damage that they did to everyone’s skin.
Have you always had a business type mentality?
I watched my parents experiment with different business ventures growing up and always knew in my heart I wanted to be my own boss. Being creative, driven and stubborn by nature, it wasn’t always easy taking direction from bosses so I started my business when I was 23 and never looked back.
What is it like spray tanning miss USA contestants?
The Miss USA pageant is my favorite event of the year. We meet so many different personalities and are a special part of making them look their best in a bikini on stage and national television. You learn a lot about people when they are getting a tanned in the nude. It typically turns into a vulnerable therapy session for the girls. It is also incredibly rewarding watching them walk across stage with our work of art on their skin!
We saw you just launched a new home spray tanning can. Can you tell us about the new product and where we can get it?
I am so proud of my new product! It’s called SHADE Self-Tanner and it provides a beautiful, long-lasting natural-looking glow that sprays on like silk. I teamed up with your fellow UFC ring girl, Brittney Palmer and her beautiful art graces the front of the can. It is available at boldsunlesstans.com and on Amazon as well!
What advice do you have for girls wanting to get spray tanned? How do they prepare?
Exfoliate. Moisturize. Hydrate. Don’t go too dark! The days of being overly spray tanned are behind us. A subtle, warm, natural glow will cover imperfections without making them look worse. Too much can make you look dirty and much older than you are!
What has been the biggest hurdle in the spray tanning business?
Moving my focus from the service part of the brand into mostly product development and online sales hasn’t been the easiest transition. It’s almost like turning over a new leaf in a sense as I now have to educate my loyal customers on how to spray themselves while acquiring new clients as well to trust the new product and the process that goes along with it.
Can you share some advice with other women wanting to start their own business?
Be patient! Success does not happen overnight. Find something that you are passionate about and become the best at it. If you can find a way to capitalize on something that sets your soul on fire and helps others feel better at the same time, I think this is a winning recipe for success.
